Enterprise restructuring tends to become a permanent feature of the global economy, especially in times of crisis. It is conceived in different, if not opposed, ways in different parts of the world. The emerging countries see it as an opportunity and a positive development as the process benefits them in terms of increased economic activity, employment and prosperity. The phenomenon also raises however significative challenges to those countries as it forces societal, regional and environmental change that is not always totally controlled. Developed countries have, in general, a different view as they feel threatened by developments in international trade and international competition that may be detrimental to economic substance, jobs and living conditions.
